James is a management consultant who advises, writes and speaks about mitigating risks to the most valuable, intangible asset of any organization, its reputation. Through a collaborative process of discovery, he develops effective public relations strategies, organizational structures, operational systems and measurement tools for corporations, nonprofits and government agencies. He has more than 30 years' experience as a senior marketing and communications executive with political, public affairs and industry trade organizations. Prior to founding his own firm in 1991, he was President of a predecessor firm, Chester Burger & Co., until Mr. Burger's retirement in 1990.
With a team of senior consultants, James has served more than 200 companies of the Fortune 500, as well as large government agencies and major non-profits. He is a hands-on consultant who has counseled the top management of such diverse organizations as AOL, AARP, American Airlines, American Bar Association, American Century Investments, American Express, Andersen Consulting, AlliedSignal, AT&T—and that's just the A's.
James was the youngest elected member of the College of Fellows of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). His training manual, Leadership and Management of Public Relations, based on a course for senior public relations staff, was first published by PRSA in 1995. He keynoted the first major conference on “American Marketing and Public Relations” in Moscow; he has been a guest lecturer on corporate communications at the Harvard Business School among others. He frequently writes lectures and conducts seminars on marketing strategy, public relations and integrated communications organized around the theme: “You Bet Your Company.” More than 1,000 senior executives have taken his PRSA Leadership course in the past 15 years.
For 16 years James was a trustee of the Arthur W. Page Society where he chaired the Business School Committee. The United Nations Association asked him to chair the Communications Committee commemorating the UN's 50th Anniversary. He served on the Advisory Committee of George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management. He served on the Private Sector Advisory Committee of the United States Information Agency. For the Advertising Council, he served on two committees: Public Issues and Public Relations. He was honored with the Ad Council's Bell Ringer Award.
James was a member of the Association of Management Consulting Firms, and served as chair of the marketing committee.
Early in his career, James was the chief marketing and communications executive for two major industry trade associations: lodging, as Vice President of the American Hotel & Motel Association, and property casualty insurance, as Vice President of the Alliance of American Insurers.
Previously James had been Executive Director of LEGIS 50/The Center for Legislative Improvement. He directed a multidisciplinary staff of 40 in the headquarters and 20 in the field for this private sector organization that counseled legislative leaders on management issues, recommended legislative process improvements, waged public information campaigns, and conducted demonstration projects with foundation funding. James has also been a press secretary and chief of staff to a Lt. Governor and the Executive Director of a Presidential Museum and Library.
James Arnold began his professional career as a college English Instructor. He has a BA magna cum laude from Harding University (1965) and completed the course work for an advanced degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University (1967).
